OTTAWA CITY GUIDE

Things to do in Ottawa
As Canada’s capital, Ottawa offers a unique mix of history, culture, and nature. There is a distinct sense of Canadian identity spread throughout the city, with its historical landmarks, political events, and museums featuring Indigenous art and other renowned collections.
1. Parliament Hill and Buildings
The centre of Canadian democracy, Parliament Hill houses breathtaking Gothic Revival-style buildings, including the iconic Peace Tower, that are home to the House of Commons, Senate, and Library of Parliament. Visitors can enjoy free guided tours year-round, as well as seasonal events like the Changing of the Guard ceremony and the Sound and Light show during the summer.
2. Rideau Canal
Built in the 19th century for military purposes, the Rideau Canal is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that expands 202 km, from Ottawa south to Kingston Harbour on Lake Ontario. Nowadays, the Rideau Canal offers a variety of fun activities throughout the year. During the warmer months, tourists can take a stroll or ride a bike along its scenic pathways, or even kayak and boat in its calm waters. During the winter, the NCC transforms the Rideau Canal into the largest skating rink in the world: visitors can skate their way through around 7.8 km in the Rideau Canal Skateway.
3. National Gallery of Canada
The National Gallery of Canada hosts one of the finest collections of Canadian and Indigenous art, as well as notable international pieces. Upon arrival, visitors will be met by the building’s striking glass towers—a masterpiece in and of itself—and Maman, a giant bronze sculpture of a spider that is considered a must-see Ottawa landmark. The National Gallery also offers rotating exhibitions year-round.
4. Dog-Friendly Activities in Ottawa
Ottawa is a dog-friendly city, but they must be kept on-leash in most of the downtown area. However, visitors don’t have to go far to find a great variety of off-leash trails and parks, including Conroy Pit, known by the locals as “Doggie Disneyland”. Beer lovers can bring their dog along to Bicycle Craft Beer, a shop and tap room in Industrial Avenue, and Kichesippi Beer, a family-owned brewery.
