Moving From the United States to Canada

Understanding your responsibilities, documentation requirements and what to expect at Canada Customs is key to the success of your relocation from U.S. to Canada.  It is mandatory that the owner of the household goods be present when the shipment clears Customs in Canada. If the owner of the goods is not present to clear Canada Customs the goods will be "held in bond" by Customs (bond fees are chargeable to the customer).

  • To avoid unnecessary delays when you cross the border, ensure that Passports, Birth Certificates, photo identification and Social Security/Insurance numbers for each family member crossing the border are up to date.
  • Check with your certified moving consultant concerning the import of prohibited items.
  • We highly recommend that you do not include any food or beverages (including alcohol) in your shipment as these items may cause delays in clearing your shipment through Canada Customs.

Required Documentation

U.S. citizens moving to Canada require:

  • A Canadian Work Visa, and confirmation of residence status for each family member traveling with you.
  • Valid Passport for each family member traveling with you.
  • Two copies of a detailed Inventory List of all items being shipped.
  • Two copies of a list of items that are arriving at a later date (if applicable).
  • Letter from new employer indicating validity of transfer (if applicable).
  • Owner packed cartons must be labeled as owner packed with the contents listed and numbered on the outside of the carton.

Canadian citizens returning to Canada from the U.S. require:

  • Valid Passport and photo identification for each family member traveling with you.
  • Two copies of a detailed Inventory List of all items being shipped.
  • Two copies of a list of items that are arriving at a later date (if applicable).

Automobiles

You MUST have the ORIGINAL TITLE for every vehicle moving from the United States to Canada. No exceptions!  Depending on your port of entry, requirements for documentation may vary. You must either fax a copy and present the original at time of crossing or courier the original AT LEAST 72 HOURS PRIOR to arriving at US Customs. Each US Customs office has different regulations.  To ensure no delays, it is best to check with the border crossing you will be using.  Duties and taxes may be assessed on your vehicle.  We recommend that you contact the Registrar of Imported Vehicles prior to shipping or driving your vehicle to Canada
